Richard Atkins Primary School

With the help of Father Nature, Richard Atkins Primary School has transformed its grounds into an inner-city oasis brimming with plants, greenhouses, and raised beds. These new features provide a wealth of exciting outdoor play and learning facilities. The children now have the perfect place to learn about nature, growing food, healthy eating, and sustainability—all while having lots of fun!

The Transformation:

Before: The school grounds were dominated by plastic and concrete, offering little to no green space for the students.

After: Father Nature collaborated with Headteacher Nadia McIntosh and Early Years Lead Linda Scott to overhaul all four playgrounds. We created a dynamic landscape featuring covered learning decks, growing corners, mud kitchens, and an eco-irrigation play station.

Project Highlights:

  • Extensive Landscaping: Over 25 tonnes of soil and 10 tonnes of wood were used.

  • Innovative Features: Included covered learning decks, mud kitchens, and eco-irrigation play stations.

  • Collaborative Effort: Worked closely with school staff, especially School Business Manager Naomi Walters, to ensure smooth execution.

The new ‘outdoor classrooms’ are now ready for use, allowing the pupils and teachers to fully embrace their status as a Natural Thinkers school. We are proud to have been part of this transformation and thank everyone at Richard Atkins Primary School for their support and collaboration.
