Cato Road in Clapham now has a fabulous new pocket park thanks to the dogged determination and hard work of the Friends of Cato Road, led by committee members Shirley Wiliams, Richard Annely, Emma Messenger and Judith Lee. Funded by Lambeth Council and Transport for London, the park has been over two years in the making and the result is a triumph – a dull and dangerous walkthrough has been transformed into a green oasis and a perfect meeting place for all the local residents, young and old, to enjoy. Situated just off Bedford Road the park has been expertly designed by local artist Giorgio Barsanti and boasts beautiful brickwork and seating, a pingpong table, chessboard table and, of course, some sturdy new planters built by Father Nature. By the end of Summer the park will be crowned by a large wall mosaic, courtesy of Giorgio (can’t wait to see it, Giorgio!)
On Sunday 12th April, the Friends of Cato Road joined forces with Father Nature to celebrate the completion of the park with a Planting Party where the local residents came out in strength to plant up the raised beds and enjoy the new space. Blessed by the Spring sunshine the day was a huge success with over 20 residents (and even some passers by) joining in the fun of digging in the new plants.
If you’re walking past Cato Road some time soon take a peak!
